He can understand that reaction. He'd feel the same way if someone tried to gift him something like that. Sure if you gave him a thousand dollars, he'd probably be pretty fucking wasteful with it, but it's not like a single thousand was enough to change his life, just make it slightly more comfortable for a little while.
